The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew
No visit to Bangkok is complete without time spent at the Grand Palace, the city’s most iconic landmark and one of the most breathtaking complexes in all of Southeast Asia. Built in 1782 as the official residence of the King of Thailand, the Grand Palace encompasses more than 100 royal buildings, pavilions and temples across its ornate grounds, representing well over two centuries of royal history. Arrive early to beat the heat and the crowds, and allow at least half a day to do the complex justice. Just a short walk away, Wat Pho houses the magnificent reclining Buddha, measuring 46 metres in length and covered entirely in gold leaf, and is the spiritual home of traditional Thai massage.
Bangkok’s Rooftops and Night Markets
When the sun goes down, Bangkok truly comes alive, and the city’s rooftop bar scene is among the finest in the world. The Mahanakhon SkyWalk, located in the Silom district, rises 314 metres above the city and features a glass-floored observation deck and rooftop bar with sweeping 360-degree views across the Bangkok skyline. For a more intimate setting, Scarlett Rooftop in Silom and Tichuca in Sukhumvit offer outstanding cocktails and city views in a more relaxed atmosphere. At street level, Bangkok’s night markets are a cultural experience in their own right. Asiatique The Riverfront combines open-air markets, restaurants and entertainment along a beautifully lit stretch of the Chao Phraya, while Khao San Road remains the city’s legendary backpacker hub, with wall-to-wall bars, live music and an atmosphere that is entirely its own.
